LE Glossary

In law enforcement, we use a lot of abbreviations and codes.  And we love acronyms!  For instance, LEO (law enforcement officer).  Some of these are more or less universal; 10-4 means pretty much the same thing everywhere in the country (message received).  Others vary by state or county; 10-54 means possible dead body in most parts of California.  In Indiana it means livestock in the roadway.  So, not all of those listed here will apply the world over.  But for the unfamiliar, this will give you some idea of what I mean when I start talking cop.

Code 4:  No further assistance required

DOR – Daily Observation Report:  Report filed by an FTO at the end of a shift, logging a trainees performance for the day.

FTO – Field Training Officer:  Experienced officer responsible for training those fresh from the academy; can also be used to refer to the Field Training program itself.  The Field Training program typically lasts from four to six months.

HBD – Has Been Drinking:  Example:  Suspect is a white male and HBD.

RP – Reporting Party:  The person calling to report something.

SO – Sheriff’s Office:  Abbreviation for local sheriff’s office.
